English 0415692334 Education and knowledge have never been more important to society, yet research is segmented by approach, methodology or topic. Legitimation Code Theory or 'LCT' extends and integrates insights from Pierre Bourdieu and Basil Bernstein to offer a framework for research and practice that overcomes segmentalism. This book shows how LCT can be used to build knowledge about education and society. Comprising original papers by an international and multidisciplinary group of scholars, Knowledge-building offers the first primer in this fast-growing approach. Through case studies of major research projects, Part I provides practical insights into how LCT can be used to build knowledge by: - enabling dialogue between theory and data in qualitative research - bringing together quantitative and qualitative methodologies in mixed-methods research - relating theory and practice in praxis - conducting interdisciplinary studies with systemic functional linguistics Part II offers a series of studies of pressing issues facing knowledge-building in education and beyond, encompassing: - diverse subject areas, including physics, English, cultural studies, music, and design - educational sites: schooling, vocational education, and higher education - practices of research, curriculum, pedagogy and assessment - both education and informal learning contexts, such as museums and masonic lodges Carefully sequenced and interrelated, these chapters form a coherent collection that gives a unique insight into one of the most thought-provoking and innovative ways of building knowledge about knowledge-building in education and society to have emerged this century. This book is essential reading for all serious students and scholars of education, sociology and linguistics., Education and knowledge have never been more important, economically, culturally and socially. We are said to live, learn and earn in 'knowledge societies' that require 'lifelong learning'. Yet research into education is segmented by discipline, theoretical approach, methodology, and topic area, and knowledge itself is absent from accounts of contemporary social and educational change. This volume shows how Legitimation Code Theory or 'LCT' places knowledge at the heart of analysis of education in ways that overcome segmentation to enable the cumulative building of knowledge. It provides both a manual in knowledge-building in research and practice, and a series of studies of knowledge-building in education and beyond. LCT is a practical theory that builds on the work of Pierre Bourdieu, Basil Bernstein, critical realism, and systemic functional linguistics. LCT offers a framework for research and practice that is increasingly influential in the sociology of education, educational studies and linguistics. This collection of original papers by an international and multidisciplinary group of scholars provides the first primer in this fast-growing approach. Part 1 of the book shows how LCT enables knowledge-building by enabling different approaches, methodologies and practices to be brought together. Part 2 illustrates the practical value of the approach by addressing pressing problems facing contemporary education in building knowledge across boundaries and contexts. Knowledge-building encompasses a wide range of subject areas (including history, English, physics, journalism, nursing) and educational sites (school and university), as well as informal learning contexts (masonic lodges and museums). Carefully selected, sequenced and interrelated, these wide-ranging chapters form a coherent and original collection and give a unique insight into one of the most thought-provoking and innovative ways of building knowledge about knowledge-building in education and society to have emerged this century. This book is essential reading for all serious students and scholars of education, sociology, and linguistics., This volume of essays presents a compelling and comprehensive analysis of the intriguing issue of the gift of the land of Israel and the fate of the Canaanites as presented in diverse biblical sources. Jewish thought has long grappled with the moral and theological implications and challenges of this issue. Innovative interpretive strategies and philosophical reflections were offered, modified, and sometimes rejected over the centuries. Leading contemporary scholars follow these threads of interpretation offered by Jewish thinkersfrom antiquity to modern times., We are said to live and learn in 'knowledge societies' that require 'lifelong learning', but knowledge itself is absent from many accounts of contemporary social and educational change. This key volume illustrates an approach that places knowledge at the heart of analysis: Legitimation Code Theory. Building on the work of Basil Bernstein, Pierre Bourdieu, systemic functional linguistics and critical realism, Legitimation Code Theory is a social realist approach that is increasingly influential in the sociology of education, educational studies and linguistics. This selection of original papers by an international and multi-disciplinary group of scholars provides the first book-length illustration of the value of this fast-growing approach. It represents a genuinely collaborative endeavour that aims to build knowledge about knowledge, both within and beyond formal education. Part I of the book shows how Legitimation Code Theory enables knowledge-building in research by enabling different approaches, methodologies and practices to be brought together. Drawing on current empirical studies, chapters show how the theory can be used in quantitative research, in qualitative research, in interdisciplinary research with systemic functional linguists, and in praxis to create e-learning environments. Part II shows the practical value of the approach by addressing pressing problems facing contemporary education in building knowledge across boundaries and contexts. Chapters discuss current research into: segmented learning, where students struggle to transfer their knowledge to future contexts of learning or work; the crisis in physics teaching; the damaging effects of constructivist pedagogy on international students; academic literacies; the crisis in school Music; transformations of university curriculum; bridging the theory-practice divide; bringing professions into higher education; and relations between formal and informal learning. The book encompasses a wide range of subject areas (including history, English, physics, journalism, nursing) and educational sites (school and university), as well as informal learning contexts (masonic lodges and museums). Carefully selected, sequenced and interrelated, these wide-ranging chapters form a coherent and original collection and give a unique insight into one of the most thought-provoking and innovative ways of understanding the role of knowledge in education and society to have emerged in recent years. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck. The Vance family story begins hopefully in postwar America. J. D.'s grandparents were "dirt poor and in love," and moved north from Kentucky's Appalachia region to Ohio in the hopes of escaping the dreadful poverty around them. They raised a middle-class family, and eventually their grandchild (the author) would graduate from Yale Law School, a conventional marker of their success in achieving generational upward mobility. But as the family saga of Hillbilly Elegy plays out, we learn that this is only the short, superficial version. Vance's grandparents, aunt, uncle, sister, and, most of all, his mother, struggled profoundly with the demands of their new middle-class life, and were never able to fully escape the legacy of abuse, alcoholism, poverty, and trauma so characteristic of their part of America. Vance piercingly shows how he himself still carries around the demons of their chaotic family history. A deeply moving memoir with its share of humor and vividly colorful figures, Hillbilly Elegy is the story of how upward mobility really feels. 0195081110 In the 30 years from 1890 to 1920--a period known as the Progressive Era--an eager and purposeful generation of American women swept out of the house and marched onto a new stage of freedom and responsibility. Many of them tried to improve their world by seeking work to better provide for themselves and their families or by tackling social problems that affected the country as a whole. Girls and women (many of them immigrants or the daughters of immigrants) swelled the growing ranks of wage earners and of high school and college students. African American women, even in the racially divided South, increasingly became teachers or owners of small businesses. Just as striking as the increase of women in the work force was the voluntary activity of both black and white women in associations organized for social reform. For working-class women, the Progressive Era was a chance to focus their energies on the labor movement and the campaign for workers' protection and child labor laws. For middle-class women raised in the traditions of women's voluntary associations, the chance to join the attack on the evils of industrial society was an extraordinary opportunity. Following leaders such as suffragist Carrie Chapman Catt, birth control pioneer Margaret Sanger, black journalist Ida B. Wells, and social worker Jane Addams, women made significant personal and social gains. In 1920 they won the right to vote. Though the Progressive Era did not bring women full social and political equality, it was nevertheless an era aptly named, for it was a time when an unprecedented number of women began to findNew Paths to Powerand fulfillment. English 0062114026 Blending memoir, literary exposition, and revealing case studies, Unrequited is a powerful, surprising, and empathetic cultural and psychological exploration of one-sided romantic obsession. The summer Lisa A. Phillips turned thirty, she fell in love with someone who didn't return her feelings. She soon became obsessed. She followed him around, called him compulsively, and talked about him endlessly. One desperate morning, after she snuck into his apartment building, he picked up a baseball bat to protect himself and began to dial 911. Her unrequited love had changed her from a sane, conscientious college teacher and radio reporter into someone she barely recognizedsomeone who was taking her yearning much too far. In Unrequited, Phillips explores the tremendous force of obsessive love in women's lives. She argues that it needs to be understood, respected, and channeled for personal growthyet it also has the potential to go terribly awry. Interweaving her own story with frank interviews and in-depth research in science, psychology, cultural history, and literature, Phillips describes how romantic obsession takes root, grows, and strongly influences our thoughts and behaviors. Going beyond images of creepy, fatally attracted psychos, male fantasies of unbridled female desire, and the platitudes of self-help books, Phillips reveals a powerful, troubling, and surprisingly common phenomenon. As she illuminates this mysterious psychological experience, placing it in a rich and nuanced context, she offers compelling insights to help any woman who has experienced unrequited obsessive love and been mystified and troubled by its grip., The summer Lisa A. English 0719082080 Balancing long-overlooked and well-known works from early modern England, Same-sex desire in early modern England, 1550-1735: An anthology of literary texts and contexts is a collection of English texts about homoerotic love, relationships, desires, and sexual acts. The anthology's core texts are selections from works of drama, fiction, romance, poetry, essays and translation. These core texts are carefully introduced and annotated, and supplemented with illuminating contextual material from other early modern disciplines such as law, medicine, and theology. Juxtaposing literary and non-literary representations of same-sex erotic desire, this anthology explores a rich tradition of works both celebrating and condemning same-sex erotic love., Same-sex desire in early modern England, 1550-1735: An anthology of literary texts and contexts is a collection of English texts dealing with same-sex erotic love, relationships, desires and sexual acts. Recent scholarship has explored extensively the nature and representation of early modern homoerotic relationships and sexual acts, but this anthology is the first devoted to their literary and non-literary representations in this crucial period when conceptions about sexuality and identity generally underwent massive change. Carefully annotated, introduced, and contextualized with selections from texts in several early modern disciplines - such as theology, medicine, and the law - the anthology's literary works come from a wide variety of genres. There are extensive selections from works in translation, drama, romance, fiction, poetry, and essays, focusing on a balance between the period's well-known homoerotic works, such as Shakespeare's Sonnets, and those which have remained much more obscure, such as Catherine Trotter's heroic drama Agnes de Castro. The anthology includes an online companion, offering further primary texts, brief interpretive essays, and an up-to-date bibliography. The selection of works from many different disciplines and genres makes Same-sex desire in early modern England, 1550-1735 ideal for use in undergraduate courses in the areas of English literature, history, and gender studies. It offers graduate students and academics provocative intersections between canonical and non-canonical literary texts, and the general reader a perhaps unexpectedly rich tradition of texts both celebrating as well as condemning same-sex erotic love. English 008037929X The Camborne School of Mines Geothermal Energy Project in Cornwall is leading the world's Hot Dry Rock geothermal technology research. It has been sponsored since 1980 by the UK Department of Energy, and for the period up to 1986 by the Commission of the European Communities. The granites of South West England are covered, with sections on lithology, mineralogy, structure and jointing, thus forming a background to the understanding of reservoir development and long-term circulation behaviour. A well was drilled and reservoir characteristics monitored using logging, microseismics and other geothermal techniques. The chemistry of the water-rock interaction was extensively studied and traces used to further characterise the reservoir. Work is being continued in Phase 2C, alongside a review of the current status of HDR technology. Phase 2B of the Project covers the period 1983-86 during which major advances in the understanding of the technology were made. R. H. Parker - Hot Dry Rock Geothermal Energy : Phase 2B Final Report of the Camborne School of Mines TXT, EPUB, FB2The presen tation of the enormous amount of material that has accumulated in this field over the last few decades may be divided into two broad categories: One can either concentrate on the physical phenomena, such as the single-particle excitations, rotations, vibrations, or large-amplitude collec tive motion, and treat each of them using a variety of theoretical methods; or one may stress the methodology and technical aspects of the different theories that have been used to describe the nucleus.Outside, the steel mills shut down, the trains stopped running, the power went out, and the hospitals ran out ofmedicine.Air Force was fully aware. Both volumes comprise of review articles written by experts on various methods of materials characterization, providing an introduction and overview of individual characterization techniques, as well as a demonstration of their application to selected problems.LEU is considered unobligated when neither the uranium nor the technology used to enrich it carries an "obligation" from a foreign country requiring that the material only be used for peaceful purposes.Even as Joe McCarthy rises in power, the U.S.Morgan Kaufmann, 1999.One poor decision. The first four chapters are devoted to the applications of general statistical techniques, and Chapters 5 to 7 are focused on solving design of experiments using one-way and two-way independent ANOVA, repeated ANOVA, and ANCOVA designs.AuthorWrite something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview. ArchivesCategories |
